Maria Montessori called the hand "the companion to the mind". She observed that manipulating objects with the hands facilitates and more fully integrates learning experiences. Learning to sew at a young age can have a far-reaching effect. The children will sew and grow, as they:

Choose (differentiation)
Measure (estimation)
Thread a needle (hand-eye corrdination)
Stitch, (accuracy)
Follow direction (sequencing/organization)
Recall (memory)
